Caring for your board
All of our boards are made from solid, natural wood. Normal wear, scratches and staining are natural and to be expected. Some softer woods may show significant wear over time. Follow these steps and your Moose Mill serving platter or charcuterie board will stay beautiful and useful for years.
Not a cutting board!
Avoid sharp utensils that dig into the surface, because they'll scratch the finish. Please don't cut on our charcuterie boards and serving platters, so the smooth finish lasts.
Regular maintenance with mineral oil
Apply food-grade mineral oil to all surfaces at least once every 6–12 months to prevent drying and cracking. Let the oil soak in overnight, then wipe off any excess. If the wood starts to look dry, or water stops beading on the surface, it's time to oil.
Extra protection with Osmo board oil
For added durability, seal the surface with Osmo food-safe Chopping Board Oil. Follow the "Recoating" instructions on the container.
Cleaning
After each use, wash your board with hot, soapy water and dry it immediately. Never soak or submerge it, as that can cause splitting and cracking. Wash both sides so it dries evenly and doesn't warp. A rubber spatula helps lift hardened food.
Stain removal
Sprinkle kosher or table salt on the stain and rub with a damp sponge.
Odour reduction
Rub salt and a cut lemon or lime over the board. Let it sit for a few minutes (not hours), then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Storage
Store boards on their edges, away from direct sunlight, with good airflow around them. This keeps moisture balanced and prevents warping.
Avoiding damage
No steel scrapers, steel wool, harsh detergents or dishwashers, please. Keep boards away from direct heat and very hot items.
